Pezenas
The nearest large town is the historic town of Pézenas, very popular with tourists seeking the old France.
Moliere
Pézenas was formerly the fortified Roman City of Piscenae, and inhabitants still call themselves Piscénois. In the middle ages the town grew rich from trade and fairs, and had a golden age when it became the seat of the Languedoc government. Many rich noblemen lived here during this period, among them, the flamboyant Armand de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. He was host to a number of artists and writers, including Molière, one of the most famous French writers.
The town has many 16 & 17C buildings and today is a flourishing centre of the wine and spirit trade. It is picturesque and unusual, with a fine array of houses, hotels and shops, now occupied by a variety of craftsmen. The Liberty statue (right) can be found in the Place de la République in the middle of Pézenas. A good place to visit for the busy Saturday market.
